Joint Program in Transfusion Medicine - Clinical Service
Clinical Service at Children's Hospital Boston
The Children's Hospital Boston Blood Bank includes a Transfusion Service, an apheresis service, and a Blood Donor Center. The Blood Donor Center collects whole blood, platelets, and red blood cells. The apheresis unit performs a wide range of therapeutic treatments including plasmapheresis, red cell exchange, stem cell collection, lipid apheresis, therapeutic phlebotomy, and red cell depletion. The apheresis and transfusion services contribute to a broad range of services in the hospital. In particular, the Bone Marrow Transplant, Sickle Cell Disease, Thalassemia, Cardiac Surgery, and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) programs utilize many blood components and blood bank services. There is active academic and clinical exchange between the clinicians in these programs and the transfusion medicine service.
